Caligula

Design and development of a dual-mode staircase—mobile when unlocked, stationary and load-bearing when locked.

The mechanism: linear actuators engage and disengage casters, with one actuator driving two casters through a leverage linkage. Wireless motor control allowed the staircase to switch modes without opening the structure. Design and mechanism integration were completed; fabrication was halted by the 2020 campus shutdown.
